1. (JMP required). Breast-feeding mothers secrete calcium into their milk. Some of the calcium may come from their bones, so mothers may lose bone mineral.
Researchers measured the percentage change in mineral content of the spines of 47 mothers during three months of breast-feeding.
a. The researchers are willing to consider these 47 women to be an SRS from the population of all nursing mothers. Suppose that the percentage change in this population has standard deviation sigma=2.5. Make a stemplot of the data to check whether the data follow a
Normal distribution or not.
b. Use a 98% confidence interval to estimate the mean percentage change in the population.
c. Would it be correct to say that the probability is 98% that the mean percentage change in the population lies in the interval you computed in part (b)? Explain your answer.
2. (JMP required). Sulfur compounds cause ‘ “off odors” in wine, and winemakers want to know the odor threshold- the lowest concentration of a compound that the human nose can detect. The odor threshold for dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in trained wine tasters is about 25 micrograms per liter of wine. The untrained noses of consumers may be less sensitive, however. Assume that the oder threshold for untrained noses is Normally distributed with sigma=7 Is there evidence that the mean threshold for untrained tasters is greater than 25ug/L? Give HO, Ha, test- statistic, p-value and your conclusion about this test.
